CERTIFICATE OF APPROVAL

Anyone who is not a British National or a Citizen of an EEA country or does not have permanent permission to live in the UK requires permission to marry or enter into a civil partnership in the UK.

Certificates of Approval are valid for 3 months from the date of issue. You must apply at a designated Registry Office to marry or register a civil partnership, and the ceremony must take place before the expiry of the certificate. If your fiancé(e) or proposed civil partner also needs a Certificate of Approval, then he or she must apply separately.

The government has announced its intention to abolish the 'certificate of approval' scheme. However, the scheme currently remains in operation, so you must apply for a certificate of approval before you can get married or register a civil partnership in the UK if you are already here and subject to immigration control.
